Columbus Blue Jackets Acquiring Goaltender From Philadelphia

It was announced Sunday morning that the Columbus Blue Jackets are acquiring goaltender Ivan Fedotov from the Philadelphia Flyers. The Blue Jackets had been seeking goaltending depth.

Fedotov Traded to Columbus

In exchange, the Flyers are acquiring 2026 sixth-round pick from Columbus. In addition, the Flyers are not retaining any of Fedotov’s remaining contract. Fedotov has just one year left on his contract. His salary is just over $3.27 million.

Career Thus Far

Fedotov, a 2015 draft pick, has spent two seasons with the Flyers. In 29 games, Fedotov has posted a 6-14-5 record alongside a .874 save percentage and a 3.29 goals against average.

Role in Columbus

Elvis Merzlikins and Jet Greaves are likely to compete the starter in Columbus. As a result, Fedotov will compete for time as the backup. Merzlikins and Greaves have strong cases to be the top two, which could put Fedotov as a third goalie and possible spend some time in the American Hockey League.

The Blue Jackets overcame adversity last season to make a strong push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The team will look to build off that momentum. As a result, should the situation call for it, Fedotov may get his chance to earn more playing time.

Furthermore, if Fedotov can take advantage of that opportunity, he could be in for a nice contract next summer. He will be an unrestricted free agent, so he could get that contract from Columbus or another team.
