The Chicago Blackhawks have decided to take care of some more business before the season starts. The news today is that their goaltender, Spencer Knight, who was set to be a restricted free agent after the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign, signs a contract extension. The Hawks have been taking care of the future, including Frank Nazar‘s recent extension as well. These moves by general manager Kyle Davidson are important in identifying the key pieces of the club’s future. The specifics on Knight’s deal is that it is for three years, worth an average annual value of a bit over $5.8 million. The total for the deal is a dollar under $17.5 million. He’s now signed until the end of the 2028-29 NHL campaign for the Hawks.

Spencer Knight Signs Three-Year Contract Extension in Chicago
It is clear that GM Davidson is establishing the key members of the future of the club. With this extension, and the dollar amount it is worth, Knight can take solace he is firmly apart of that vision.
Knight was acquired from the Florida Panthers, in the major Seth Jones deal. Given a player of Jones quality, you would have to think there are some expectations placed on Knight to show he is worthy of that value. Now, it is up to the player to focus on his play, and eventually bring the Hawks to relevancy. The Blackhawks are in the midst of a organizational rebuild, and need young players developing together as a core. Knight will join the likes of Nazar, along with Connor Bedard and Artyom Levshunov in establishing the club’s core going forward.

Knight has had an up-and-down professional hockey career thus far. He has battled some off-ice issues, but the past two seasons clearly show they are long in the rearview. In his rookie season, back in 2021-22 with the Florida Panthers, he played 32 games, and posted a fabulous .908 save percentage. That included 11 games in the AHL as well. However, the next year, he was limited to just 23 professional contests, somewhat stunting his development. Although, it appears taking a step back, was exactly what he needed.
In 2023-24, Knight played 45 games for the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, really finding his game. Then last year, he managed 38 NHL games, 23 with Florida and 15 with Chicago down the stretch. Thus, proving that he can handle the workload of a professional hockey season. His combined numbers last year were solid. He posted a 17-16-3 record, with two shutouts, a 2.89 goals-against average and a .901 SV%. Chicago is looking for him to mix stability with growth for the future between the pipes this coming year, and beyond.
