Winnipeg Jets Forward Signs Three-Year Extension

On Wednesday, the Winnipeg Jets locked up one of their key forwards. Today they announced Alex Iafallo signs a three-year contract extension.

Iafallo Signs New Deal

Iafallo was in the final year of his current contract and was set to enter free agency this summer. However, the Jets and Iafallo came to a deal, as the 31-year-old signs a three-year extension. It is carrying an average annual value of $3.66 million. This is a slight decrease from his previous deal, which paid him an AAV of $4 million per puckpedia.com.

The decrease in pay for Iafallo secures an important piece of the Jets’ core. Also, it saves some cap space that could aid in bringing back another key name that is set to hit free agency this summer, star left winger Nikolaj Ehlers.

His Career and Play This Season

Originally undrafted, Iafallo spent six seasons with the Los Angeles Kings beginning in 2017-18. There, he made a name for himself as a skilled winger in the process and reaching his career high of 43 points with the Kings during the 2019-20 season. In June of 2023, Iafallo was acquired by Winnipeg in the trade that sent forward Pierre-Luc Dubois to Los Angeles.

Iafallo’s numbers took a dip in his first season with the Jets, but this season, he has returned to some semblance of his former self, putting up 15 goals and 31 points through 81 games. His play has led him to be a primary fixture on the wing of the Jets’ first forward line and has helped the Jets lock up the 2025 Presidents’ Trophy with a league-leading 55-22-4 record, three standings points ahead of the second-place Washington Capitals.

Following their final game of the season against the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night, Iafallo and the Jets’ next task will be a first-round battle with the St. Louis Blues in the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Blues have been one of the NHL’s hottest teams of late, going 21-5-4 since Feb. 1 – the second-best record in the league during that span. This will be a great opening-round test for the top-dog Jets.
