Red Wings Sign Forward To Extension

The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Jonatan Berggren to a one year $825,000 contract.

Red Wings Extend Berggren

The Red Wings are bringing back one of their future depth pieces, signing Jonatan Berggren to a one-year deal.

Berggren, 24, has played in parts of two seasons at the major level and has spent parts of three seasons with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.

In the two full seasons he spent in Grand Rapids (2021-2022 and 2023-2024), he notched 64 and 56-point seasons.

In his lone complete season with the Red Wings, he put up 28 points in 67 games.

What This Means

For the Red Wings, this is essentially bringing in a decent 30-point scorer.

Although he hasn’t spent much time at the NHL level, he has played an almost complete season and notched almost 30 points.

A consistent bottom-six role with solid depth around him, and he could consistently hit that 30-point mark.

With his relatively low cap hit, this deal could make a lot of sense if he re-signs again next season.

An Important Upcoming Season

As it stands, this is an important season for Berggren.

He has essentially signed a one-year prove-it deal, as he is fresh off a three-year $925k AAV ELC.

Although he has put up solid points, it can be assumed that the Red Wings would look for a little more from the 24-year-old.

As mentioned earlier, with a consistent roster spot he could achieve the numbers they want. At this point, it’s a matter of whether he will get the spot or not, considering he has spent more time in the AHL.
