Alain Vigneault Joins the Philadelphia Flyers
In his last gig in the NHL, Vigneault led the New York Rangers to a 34-49-9 record. The Rangers ended the season in the last place of the Metropolitan Divison. He ended his time with the Rangers with a record of 226-147-37 over the five years he coached in New York.
Over his 16-year NHL coaching career, Vigneault has coached the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, and the Rangers. Overall he has a 648-435-35-98 record in 1,216 games behind the bench. His greatest success was with the Rangers. He led the team to the playoffs in four of the five years that he coached there. Vigneault won the Jack Adams Award in 2007 with the Canucks.
What This Means for the Team’s Future
Vigneault last coached in the NHL during the 2017-18 season with the Rangers before being fired after the season. Despite not having a job for the past year Vigneault was recently named head coach of Team Canada for the World Championships in May. Former Los Angeles Kings coach Wilie Desjardins landed a job with the Kings after coaching in the same tournament last summer.
The Quebec City native is no stranger to the Stanley Cup Playoffs as he has coached in 139 playoff games including two Stanley Cup Finals. With the 2017-18 season being his first losing season since the 2001-02 season, the Flyers expect to have a bounce-back year with Vigneault behind the bench.
