NHL Rumours: Maple Leafs Forward Might Be On The Way Out

Welcome to another edition of NHL Rumours. This time, we focus on Nick Robertson, who may be on his way out.

Nick Robertson Might Be On The Way Out

Rumour: Per Frank Seravalli, Nick Robertson is more likely to be traded despite signing a new 1x870k deal.

Nick Robertson has had a rollercoaster tenure with the Maple Leafs to start his NHL career.

The 2019 53rd overall pick hasn’t played a full season with the Maple Leafs yet. In fact, the most games he’s played with them across all levels is 56 this past season.

With that being said, it makes sense that Robertson wants out.

Despite the praise he received early on, it’s taken him four seasons to get a spot on the main roster.

What He Brings

Despite his low point totals, the 2023-2024 season is an insight into his potential.

27 points in 56 games could be only a start if he gets a full time role with another team.

The opportunity to be on the ice for a full 82 game season may be the breakout he needs.

Last season was Robertson’s most consistent stretch at the major league level, and he has a very low cap hit at a slight bit above league minimum. This makes it easy for a team to take a risk with Robertson and then sign him to a much larger extension if there is success.

On The Way Out

To summarize it, the problem with Robertson in Toronto is that the Maple Leafs are contending.

General Manager Brad Treliving has brought in several pieces to try and fix the depth issue.

Although most of those pieces were defencemen, the rumours surrounding Max Pacioretty don’t leave much room for the 22 year old project left winger.

Regarding the project, the Leafs’ deadline to win is getting closer.

They are still the only MLSE-owned team to not win a title, and the fans are getting impatient.

The best case scenario would involve getting some value out of Robertson and freeing up a roster spot if Pacioretty does sign for the upcoming season.

Teams That Could Use Robertson

For the time being, a team that can give him the minutes he needs looks to be the best-case scenario. He is only 22 with a lot of time to grow in a market he prefers to stay in, with a role that satisfies him.
