New York Rangers Sign Former Second-Round Pick to One-Year Contract

As the New York Rangers load up for another run at the Stanley Cup, they sign second-round pick Matthew Robertson to a one-year contract extension. Originally drafted 49th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, the 23-year-old has since spent the past three seasons developing with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. He has contributed significantly to the club, scoring 55 points in 190 games.

Robertson’s progression has been closely monitored as a former highly-touted prospect. His re-signing is a sign to the faith the Rangers organization continue to have in his potential. Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 201 lbs, Robertson combines size with a two-way game. This has earned him recognition as one of the Rangers’ top prospects.

Rangers Sign Second-Round Pick Matthew Robertson

Matthew Robertson recorded 21 points (one goal, 10 assists) in 61 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack during the 2023-2024 season. He has impressed with his ability to move the puck effectively. With his entry-level contract expiring, Robertson’s new deal marks a pivotal moment as he aims to secure a permanent spot on the Rangers’ roster. The Rangers left-handed defensive depth is shallow after K’Andre Miller and Ryan Lindgren. Robertson has the opportunity to attain the third pairing spot for himself to play significant NHL minutes.

The Rangers’ development staff has focused on Robertson’s defensive game and situational awareness while working with him. His goal is to make a significant impact in the upcoming season, potentially pairing up with familiar faces like Braden Schneider, with whom he shared a stint in the AHL.

Looking Forward

As the Rangers look to re-load their roster, Robertson’s growth and readiness will be crucial. Fans can look forward to seeing his contributions as he steps onto the NHL stage, poised to fulfill the promise he has shown throughout his developmental years. Moreover, with a two-way contract, Matthew Robertson presents a flexible defensive option. He can be sent to the AHL easily, and could see significant minutes both in the NHL and the AHL this season.
