Alexander Wennberg Signs a New Deal
Wennberg is coming off of a contract that was paying him $5 million for the past two seasons. His production fell off slightly in 2023-24, but he remains a very reliable middle-six piece for a team.
What Will Wennberg Bring to his Team
Furthermore, his time with the Seattle Kraken showed his value. In his three seasons there, he had a 0.45 PPG and averaged 18:25 a night. He plays both special teams, and is just an all-around great versatile player with added offensive presence. Since his trade to the New York Rangers at the 2024 trade deadline, his production did drop off. He only managed five points in 19 regular season games after coming over. However, the Rangers did possess a deeper lineup than did the Kraken. Therefore, it made sense he saw his ice time drop from 18:49 with the Kraken in 2023-24, to just 15:22 with the Rangers. Furthermore, he was never really able to get it going in the playoffs for the Rangers either. He managed a single goal and an assist in 16 playoff contests for the Blueshirts.
He is 29 years old, but can still provide lots of intangibles to his club. His experience would show as a leader to a younger group. Also, as we mentioned he plays both the power play and penalty kill, so he will find ways to contribute. The fact that he has played around 18 minutes a night for six seasons throughout his career, proves to his head coach that he can be relied upon. If he can find some offensive chemistry, like he had in Seattle or back to his Columbus Blue Jacket days, he can bring real value to his club. This is a player with a career-high of 59 points. With his age, and his reliable play, finding the right fit for him could allow him to provide very consistent scoring to the middle-six group in your lineup.
