Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign One of their RFAs

The Carolina Hurricanes announced they have re-signed RFA Jack Drury to a two-year contract carrying a $1.725 million AAV. Drury has shown a lot of progress since being drafted by Carolina and has proven his worth to stick around. This deal avoids arbitration.

Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Jack Drury

Jack Drury comes from an impressive hockey pedigree. His father, Ted Drury, played in the NHL for a handful of teams including the Hartford Whalers. His uncle, Chris Drury, also played in the NHL and is currently the General Manager of the New York Rangers.

Drafted in the second-round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Jack Drury found his way to Carolina on a somewhat winding path. Starting at Harvard in the NCAA, Drury moved over to the SHL in Sweden when Covid shut down his college opportunity for the year. With the Vaxjo Lakers, he helped the team win a SHL Championship. He returned to North America and played a few seasons in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves. His first taste of NHL action came in 2021-22 when he scored two goals in two games with the Hurricanes. The next year he almost evenly split his time between the AHL and NHL and this past season he became an NHL regular.

In 74 games this season, Drury scored eight goals and 19 assists. Playing mostly in a fourth-line role, he found decent chemistry with Stefan Noesen. At many times during the season the two were Carolina’s most effective forwards. When needed, Drury stepped up in the second-line centre position.

What This Means Moving Forward

Jack Drury re-signing provides Carolina with a strong depth piece who has the potential to continue progressing. Drury is a Rod Brind’Amour type player. A hard worker, smart at both ends of the ice, not afraid to play physical, and over 50% in the faceoff circle. At 24 years old, it will be interesting to watch Drury continue to progress in Carolina. His ceiling could be a strong third-line centre but it is not impossible for him to prove those projections wrong. For now, he can call Carolina home again.
