Edmonton Oilers to Sign Corey Perry
While the Edmonton Oilers are on a tear right now, their sights are set on the Stanley Cup. With high-flying forwards like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, what more do they need? How about a depth forward with years of NHL and Stanley Cup experience who isn’t afraid to play the agitator? In comes Corey Perry who will reportedly join the team for the rest of the season.
The almost 20-year veteran has 421 goals and 471 assists in 1,273 NHL games. After spending the majority of his career as a cornerstone piece of the Anaheim Ducks, including winning a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007, Perry has bounced around the NHL. He went to the Stanley Cup Finals three years in a row with three different teams but lost all three. However, for each of those teams, he played an important role. The most recent was the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning then traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks this past offseason. Chicago brought him in as a mentor to their younger players like Connor Bedard. But unfortunately, something happened internally with the team that resulted in Perry leaving part of the way through the season. But now, he will take his services up to Oil Country.
What This Means
Whatever transpired between the Blackhawks and Corey Perry is in the past as Perry now has an opportunity to join arguably the hottest team in the league right now. With Perry, the Oilers are getting a player who has tons of NHL experience, has shown he can chip in offensively, and has no problem playing an agitator role to get under other teams’ skins. With the skill in place amongst the Oilers forwards, Perry can serve as somewhat of a protector while not being a waste of space offensively in the bottom six. He is tough to play against and knows what it takes to make it in the playoffs.
