2019 Winter Classic Uniforms Released

The Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins have released the uniforms each team will wear for the 2019 Winter Classic. The Original Six matchup is the fourth one to appear in the Winter Classic and both teams will feature jerseys inspired by looks from some of their early jerseys used over 80 years ago.

Winter Classic Uniforms Released

Chicago Blackhawks

The home team will be wearing a jersey inspired by their 1926-1934 uniforms when the team’s colors were only black and white.

The updated logo, released on Aug. 28, shows a black and white outline of their current logo that debuted in 1965 and was updated in 1999. The circle around the logo, however, is new.

The concept was a part of the team’s first ever jersey in 1926, but from then to 1955, the logo had “Black Hawks” across the top – not “Blackhawks”. The subtle change came in 1986 and has stayed one word since then.

The jersey mimics the design of the one used when the team only had one jersey. The striping and, of course, logo are slightly changed to fit modern style.

Boston Bruins

The Bruins released the primary logo on Aug. 24 that resembles the first black ‘B’ logo that the team used from 1934-1936. In a picture released by the team, the background shows pictures of older Bruins wearing the uniform of that time period, hinting at the style of the jersey the team would use for the 11th Winter Classic. This is the first Winter Classic that the Bruins will have wear white as the main color of their jersey, as both of their prior ones were at home.

Printed inside the collar are six clovers have the years that the Bruins have won the Stanley Cup.

The team opted to update the jersey’s look, like the Blackhawks, and change the striping on the sweater to fit more modern jerseys while still keeping heritage in mind.

2019 Winter Classic Matchup

Both the Blackhawks and Bruins have been in multiple Winter Classics, so the veteran players on both teams will know how to handle the conditions and can communicate that to the rest of their teammates. Chicago, despite being in three, has never won a Winter Classic, losing to the Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues.

Boston has appeared in two, winning the first against the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime and then losing the second in a blowout 5-1 loss to their greatest rivals, the Montreal Canadiens.

Two of the longest-lasting American franchises in the NHL will go head-to-head at Notre Dame Stadium on the first day of 2019.
