As the deadline approaches, the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers have agreed to a trade that sends defenseman Brandon Davidson to Long Island in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Brandon Davidson to New York Islanders in exchange for a draft pick

In Brandon Davidson, the New York Islanders get a depth defenceman that can slide into a bottom six role. He also possesses a very effective slap shot. This season, the 26-year-old has three goals and two assists for five points. Davidson also added 19 minutes in penalties while splitting time with the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers organizations. His Corsi is very good this season, sitting at 51.7%, which is 0.6% higher than his career. However, with the Oilers this year, his Corsi was 49.1%. With the Canadiens, it was 56.6%.

Davidson was originally drafted by the Oilers in the 6th round of the 2010 Draft (162 overall). He debuted with Edmonton in the 2014-15 season and was then traded to Montreal at last seasons trade deadline in exchange for David Desharnais. The Oilers were able to regain the six-foot-two blue-liner after Montreal placed him on waivers in early December. He has tallied eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in his 137 game career. Davidson has also tallied a total of 59 penalty minutes.

Edmonton Gets a Pick

The Edmonton Oilers were able to get an asset in this trade and dump a $1.4 million cap hit. The asset is a third-round pick in 2019 and in acquiring the pick, the Oilers now have two picks in the third round of the draft. Even if the pick doesn’t stay with Edmonton, it could be used as a piece in another trade in the off-season or even at the deadline on Monday.
