The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenceman Derrick Pouliot from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Andrey Petan and a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft.

The former eighth overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft was once one of the Penguins prized prospects, but five years later, the defenceman has just 67 NHL games to his name, 11 of which came last season. He did not register a point. Over his career Pouliot has registered just one season, of 22 games, where he posted a positive adjusted Rel CF% (8.6). It was strong enough to drive his overall relative numbers to 2.73%, despite posting negative results in both his 2014-15, and 2016-17 appearances.

Pouliot totaled 59 points in 72 games with the Portland Winterhawks in his draft year and averaged nearly a point a game in his first AHL season but has since struggled to continue his offensive production. His production rates have dropped in each subsequent season, and the once untouchable has quickly fallen out of favour with the Penguins brass.
Luckily the former Winterhawk still carries some with his former coach. Travis Green, the newest bench boss for the Canucks also coached the Winterhawks during Pouliot’s time with the team. The Canucks will have to make room for their new acquisition, and it’s expected Patrick Weircioch will be put on waivers to make room for him.

In exchange the Pens picked up Andrey Petan. A former third round pick of the Islanders in 2011, Pedan was sent to Vancouver in 2014. The 24-year-old defenceman appeared in 13 games with the Canucks last year. Offense is not Pedan’s strong-point. He boasts a career high 21 points in 45 games with the Utica Comets in the 2015-16 season, but at 6’5″ and 213 lbs, he can bring some physicality to the Penguins blueline.
