Blake Wheeler Set To Join Broadway

Blake Wheeler

The New York Rangers have signed Blake Wheeler to a one-year contract. Additionally, the one-way contract carries an average annual value of $800,000 and $300,000 in signing bonuses.

Wheeler Finds New Home Following Buyout

Wheeler provides quality offensive depth for his new team. He scored 16 goals and 39 assists for 55 points in 72 games last season. During his career, Wheeler has notched 312 goals and 610 assists for 922 points in 1,118 games.

Wheeler didn’t anticipate negotiating a new contract via free agency this summer. Then, the Jets bought out the final year of his contract on Friday. While his ending in Winnipeg was rough, he has a lot to look forward to in the Big Apple.

Wheeler’s Passing and Special Teams Abilities

Wheeler’s 100 power-play points over the past five seasons boast an impressive resume. This total ranks 39th best amongst the entire NHL. In addition, Wheeler ranks 15th in primary assists in all situations over the past five seasons with 141.

Wheeler’s vision makes him a candidate for the right circle. He displays his hockey IQ through his ability to time the curl toward the defenceman quarterbacking to receive a pass in stride. From there, Wheeler can fire a cross-ice pass, move it down low, or shoot.

Blake Wheeler’s Role With New York

The Rangers has lacked consistent scoring at even strength over the past few seasons. While it’s unlikely the once 90-point scorer returns to peak form, Wheeler provides a cost-effective scoring punch for the Rangers middle-six forward group. A potential fit is a third-line scoring threat next to Vincent Trocheck.

It’s crucial for Head Coach, Peter Laviolette to play Alexis Lafrierene and Kaapo Kakko in the top-six. In case the kids don’t work out in this role, Wheeler can easily slot in as a second-line winger. Bringing in Wheeler ends Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane’s tenure in New York.
