The Ottawa Senators Re-signed Likable Defenceman Travis Hamonic to a Contract

Travis Hamonic

The Ottawa Senators have been able to come to terms with veteran defenceman Travis Hamonic. The contract is a two-year deal with a cap hit of $1.1 million per season. This continues the run of business-savvy moves from Pierre Dorion. This type of work from Dorion does span the duration of his tenure as General Manager of the Ottawa Senators. Having a well-liked, experienced member back on the blueline is only positive.

Travis Hamonic Re-signs to Stay with the Ottawa Senators

The Manitoba native has built a nice career since being drafted 53rd overall by the New York Islanders in 2008. Last year was a bit of a resurgence for Hamonic, suiting up in 75 games. That amount was his career-high believe it or not. However, he has appeared in 60 games or more seven other times and also played all 48 in 2012-13. Hamonic may be removed from the player that saw him record 213 hits in 2014-15, but he still brings grit. You can tell by his smile missing a few chicklets. In 2022-23, he averaged 18:34 in ice time, recorded 143 block shots, and 109 hits. Also, he registered 21 points with barely any power play time.

What Does This Mean for the Ottawa Senators

Bringing back Hamonic helps it in a lot of ways. Last year he was able to prove himself to be a competent third-pair defenceman at this point in his career. Furthermore, he is a likable figure around the locker room. We have heard that this is an important aspect of the Senators organization in rounding out their roster. One young defenceman, in particular, the Travis Hamonic contract re-signing really benefits is Tyler Kleven. Nobody wants too much pressure thrust on the young Kleven. He appeared in his first eight NHL games near the end of the 2022-23 season. They need a player like Hamonic to tutor the young rearguard, and to allow him time to grow. Having Hamonic will reduce the need to play in the NHL every night, killing penalties, and allow time to reflect.
