The Calgary Flames and General Manager Brad Treliving have mutually agreed to part ways. Previously, the ownership group had expressed interest in bringing Treliving back. However, with the GM’s deal expiring at the 2022-23 conclusion, it was now decided to go in another direction. It looks as though Don Maloney will be taking over, at least in an interim capacity. The Calgary Flames Twitter account is saying he will become President of Hockey Operations and interim GM.

Calgary Flames, GM Brad Treliving Part Ways
For Treliving and the Flames, it was a bit of a bittersweet relationship. He took over from Brian Burke as GM of the Flames in 2014. Since that time the Flames made the postseason five times. Of those five trips to the postseason, twice they made the second round. Moreover, missing the playoffs in 2022-23 means leaving on a low. After capturing the Pacific division crown last year, expectations were high. The team dropped 18 points in the standings, year over year. Coming up short, in a tough wild card playoff race, is tough for an organization, with such high expectations.
What Does this Mean for the Flames Organization?
The Flames will have to move forward after missing the playoffs, and losing their GM. In Treliving’s time, he was able to renew the passion of the Battle of Alberta. Although the Edmonton Oilers appear to be strong and steady, this season was a setup for Calgary. The fan base and organization were right to have high expectations. This was despite Treliving giving up two superstars in the off-season, Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau. The return and the fact there was security for the future is and was the reason for optimism. Nazem Kadri signed until 2029, and Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar each signed until 2031 are those reasons.
