Carolina Hurricanes Sign Rookie Goalie to Lengthy Extension

Carolina Hurricanes right wing Andrei Svechnikov (37) and Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov (52) greet each other after a game between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Chicago Blackhawks on November 14, 2022 at the United Center in Chicago, IL.

The Carolina Hurricanes signed goalie Pyotr Kochetkov to a four-year contract extension worth $2 million AAV. This contract will carry him through the 2026-27 season. The contract was announced by the team this morning.

Carolina Hurricanes Rookie Goalie Signs Extension

The Hurricanes get a quality backup goalie in Kochetkov, who has been playing well in his first full season in the NHL. Through four games in the 2022-23 season, he’s posted a 2.00 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. He has posted a career 5-0-2 record in seven career games with the Hurricanes, with a career 2.16 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage, as well as one career shutout. In four appearances for the Hurricanes in last season’s playoffs, he posted a 1-2 record.

In the 2021-22 season, Kochetkov had 15 appearances with the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate team, the Chicago Wolves, posting a .921 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average. He helped lead the Wolves to a Calder Cup win last season, putting up a 5-1 record and two shutouts in six playoff appearances. In five AHL appearances this year, Kochetkov has a 3.00 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage.  Last season was Kochetkov’s first season playing in North America, coming off three seasons in the KHL. The Hurricanes selected Kochetkov in the 2019 NHL draft, with the Russian native picked in the second round at 36th overall.

What This Means for the Hurricanes

Signing Kochetkov means that the Hurricanes slot another capable backup into their goalie lineup, as well as making a solid investment in the future of the goaltending position. With Frederik Andersen out on IR, Kochetkov has been the next man up behind Antti Raanta. President and General Manager of the Hurricanes, Don Waddell, stated: “Pyotr has been extremely solid for both Carolina and Chicago since coming to North America last season. We believe he has a bright future in our crease, and we’re excited to watch him as he continues to grow as a person and player.”
