Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane left Tuesday’s game after suffering a scary wrist injury in the second period. Kane fell onto the ice after a hit by Tampa Bay Lightning’s Philippe Myers. Lightning forward Pat Maroon then accidentally skated over his wrist causing the deep cut to his wrist. This caused Kane to immediately begin to bleed badly causing a scary scene at Amalie Arena. UPDATE: Kane will be out 3-4 months after having surgery on his wrist. The Oilers placed the veteran forward on long-term injured reserve.
Evander Kane Injured Against Tampa Bay
Kane then quickly skated to the Oilers benches, frantically calling for a team doctor. Per Sportsnet’s Gene Principe, Oilers General Manger Ken Holland provided an update on Kane’s condition. Kane had a deep cut on his wrist and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He will have surgery on his wrist and is in stable condition. The timeline for his return will likely be evaluated after surgery is complete.
Prior to this injury, Kane was producing well for the Oilers. He has five goals and eight assists in 13 games played. He is in his first year of his four-year contract with the Oilers after re-signing with the team this off season.
What It Means
The injury is a particularly nasty one for the veteran forward. Kane should be able to make a recovery, but it’s unknown how long he will be out for. Edmonton did get its first win in Tampa Bay in 13 years with a 3-2 victory.
Kane’s injury means there will be some shuffling of the lineup for head coach Jay Woodcroft. The Vancouver native is a key piece to the Oilers and their race to make it back to the Stanley Cup Final.
