Dallas Stars Acquire Nils Lundkvist for Top Pick

Earlier this month it was reported to USA Today’s, Vince Mercogliano that New York Rangers defencemen Nils Lundkvist was sitting out for Rangers training camp which is set to begin Sept 21st, 2022. The 22-year-old requested a trade and would sit tight in his home country of Sweden until a deal was done. With two years remaining on his entry-level contract, it was confirmed this evening that the trade request was finally honoured. His entry-level contract is good for an AAV of $925,000.

Rangers Make Nils Lundkvist Trade with Stars

First broke by The Athletic’s Shayna Goldman and followed up by NY Post’s Larry Brooks, Nils Lundvist was traded to the Dallas Stars for a 2023 First Round pick. The 2023 draft is deep with along of talent coming down the pipeline, but the return on this trade varies depending on how far the Stars can make it this coming season. This past season, Lundkvist had 25 regular games played with a goal and three assists.

What He Brings

The Pitea, Sweden native was the New York Rangers 2018 First Round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. With not much to speak for in terms of his size, he was labeled as a fast puck moving defencemen. Starting off his career, Lundkvist played for Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). He steadily improved over his tenure in the SHL. The young blueliner ultimately finished his 2020-2021 season with 14 goals and 18 assists in 52 games. He was even named the winner of the Salming Trophy during that season. The award is given to the best Swedish-born defenseman in the SHL. Now bothsthe Stars and Lundkvist hope that he can capitalize on this opportunity to show is talents when Stars training camp beings on Sept 22nd.

With this chapter closed, Lundkvist gets his opportunity and the Rangers can head into training camp without distraction.
