Winnipeg Jets Coach Hunt Is Almost Over
As the report by Darren Dreger says, it is not final. However, it’s interesting to see that they went with Rick Bowness when Kevin Weekes reported Rick Tocchet was their leading candidate. With this news, the only thing left to wonder is whether Tocchet denied the offer or they chose to go with Bowness regardless.
Rick Bowness Means Experience Behind the Bench
Bowness has been an NHL coach for decades now and has a ton of experience – something the Jets were looking for. They went after former New York Islanders coach Barry Trotz first. But after a month of mystery, he declined the offer and decided to take a sabbatical year. Rick Tocchet is also a well-experienced coach. As much as a surprise this might be for some, going with Bowness makes sense.
His coaching career started way back in 1982 – yes, he’s that old. Throughout those 40 years, Bowness only spent four seasons in the AHL. Most of his experience comes as an associate or assistant head coach. However, he’s had some success as a head coach himself. In the 2020 playoff bubble, he took the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup Final after taking over the team midway through the season. After the loss to the Calgary Flames, Bowness stepped down as their head coach.

According to his note published by the Stars, he wanted to pursue new directions. He had an 89-62-25 record in three seasons as their HC the Stars. Now, he goes on a new adventure with the Jets.
