Chris Wideman Suspended for Head-butting
In the midst of a scrum during the third period, Wideman head-butted Haula in the side of the face. Haula initially rushed over to join the after-the-whistle scrum, grabbed Wideman around the neck, and tried to take him out of the action. Following this, the angry Wideman head-butted Haula, who had a bloody nose after the play.
It was not a pretty game for Wideman’s Canadiens, as they lost 5-1 to a surging Boston Bruins team. Outplayed for much of the game, the team never had a real chance throughout the contest. Their only goal came from depth forward Michael Pezzetta.
This is Wideman’s first suspension through 204 NHL games. Prior to signing with the Canadiens, the 32 year old defenceman spent much of his career playing for the Ottawa Senators, the team that drafted him. He has produced nine points in twenty three games while playing on a below average Canadiens defence. The St. Louis native has looked comfortable with the Canadiens, and is likely looking for a newer, more lucrative contract next season. Wideman will become a UFA, and there will likely be some interest in the defencemen around the league.
Going Forward
Luckily, both Wideman and Haula have not reported signs of being injured following the incident.
The Montreal Canadiens continue to disappoint this season, currently sitting in last place in the Atlantic division. The franchise currently holds a dismal record of 7-24-4. They will be looking to gain some pieces during the offseason and at the trade deadline to be more competitive next season.
