Jenner Named Franchise’s Seventh Captain
Boone Jenner is entering his ninth season in the league and with the Blue Jackets. The 28-year-old centre has played in 530 games for Columbus and has scored 121 goals and 119 assists. The Dorchester, Ontario native was drafted 37th overall by the team in 2011 but spent his remaining two seasons of junior eligibility playing for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL. He played 10 AHL games during that two-year stretch between his being drafted and his NHL debut in 2013. In those contests, he scored four goals and an assist. His rookie year in 2013 saw him post an impressive stat line for a rookie. In 72 NHL games that season he netted 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points. The Blue Jackets’ previous captain, centre Nick Foligno, was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs at last season’s trade deadline.
What This Means for the Future
Boone Jenner has been a fan favourite of the franchise since his NHL debut in 2013. He’s a strong middle six player who’s great on the penalty kill and can be relied on to score in the dying seconds of a game if needed. The supporting cast of alternate captains is also made up of fan favourite players. More importantly, however, they’re all great locker room presences for the team to build off of as they try to get back into the playoff this season. The Blue Jackets will have their work cut out for them this year as the Metropolitan division is going to be one of the toughest to make the playoffs in.
