Nick Suzuki Signs Long-Term Extension

Per Elliotte Friedman, Marc Bergevin has locked up his star forward on an eight-year deal with an average annual salary of $7.875 million.

“We are very happy to secure Nick’s services for the next eight seasons,” said general manager Marc Bergevin.

Nick Suzuki is entering the final year of his ELC (Entry Level Contract) this season. During his two years in the NHL, Suzuki has played in 127 games, amassing 28 goals and 82 points.

Suzuki had a breakout year with the Canadiens last season and was an integral part of their Stanley Cup Finals run.

In 22 playoff games last year, Nick notched seven goals and 16 points, helping to lead the offence of Montreal’s dynamic first line.

Suzuki was originally drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights 13th overall in the 2017 draft. He never dressed for the Golden Knights as he was dealt to the Canadiens in a blockbuster trade that involved former Montreal star, Max Pacioretty, back in 2018.

What This Means For the Future

Suzuki is a cornerstone piece of this Montreal team and getting him signed long-term before the season starts is a huge win for Bergevin and the Canadiens. Fans are expecting a lot from this young forward and rightfully so. His instant chemistry with Cole Caufield was evident during the playoffs last season and provided plenty of excitement for fans in La Belle province.

Montreal is in tough against a stacked Atlantic Division. Most of the teams in the division all boast deep rosters and have their core players signed on long-term deals. But the signing of Suzuki is a great start to solidifying their offence and being able to push towards the Atlantic Division crown and stay competitive for years to come.
