The Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, and Detroit Red Wings have all made minor, depth signings as free agency approaches.
Hurricanes, Senators, Red Wings Make Depth Signings
Carolina
On Tuesday, the Hurricanes re-signed forward Patrick Brown and defenceman Jake Chelios.
Brown, 25, was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2014 by Carolina. In three years in the Hurricanes system, Brown has played 28 games in the NHL, scoring two points. He tallied 28 points in 66 games with the Charlotte Checkers in 2016-17. A one-year, two-way contract, Brown will make $650,000 in the NHL and $160,00 in the AHL. He is guaranteed to make $190,000.
Son of Hall of Famer Chris Chelios, Jake was an undrafted free agent after four years at Michigan State. He signed with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL on a two-year deal. Chelios joined Carolina’s affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, in 2015-16, recording 31 points in 73 games. The performance warranted an NHL contract, although he spent all of 2016-17 in the AHL again. The 26-year-old tallied 32 points in 76 games, good enough to earn one-year, two-way contract worth $650,000 at the NHL level, and $85,000 in the AHL.
Ottawa
The Senators re-signed Max McCormick to a two-year contract. A pending UFA, McCormick will make $650,000 in the NHL and $200,000 in the AHL in the first year of the contract. Afterward, in the second year of the deal is one-way, where he will make $650,000.
McCormick, 25, was drafted in the sixth round by Ottawa in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He spent three years at Ohio State before joining the Binghamton Senators. McCormick has played 27 games in the NHL, scoring four points. This past year with Binghamton, McCormick tallied 36 points in 66 games to go with 105 PIM.
Detroit
Ben Street was re-signed by the Red Wings on a one-year contract. A veteran depth player, the 30-year-old helped the Grand Rapids Griffins en route to the Calder Cup. Additionally, Street has played 35 games in the NHL, including six this past year with the Red Wings. In the AHL, Street recorded 55 points in 62 games, as well as 21 points in 19 Calder Cup playoff games. He was also an alternate captain with the Griffins.
