Columbus Blue Jackets acquire Jordan Schroeder from Minnesota Wild

The Columbus Blue Jackets have dove head first into the trade market today. They shook things up when trading with the Chicago Blackhawks for Artemi Panarin, sending Brandon Saad back to Chicago. Along with this trade, they have acquired the depth at center that they are in desperate need for after losing William Karlsson to expansion in the form of centerman Jordan Schroeder.

In exchange for the depth at center that the Blue Jackets desperately needed, they have sent prospect Dante Salituro. While Salituro has been panning out nicely, Schroeder is a good addition to fill in the hole left by Karlsson in the bottom six immediately.

Salituro is a 20-year old centerman who spent the 2016-17 season split between the OHL, the ECHL, and the AHL. Salituro played in 30 games with the London Knights, scoring 11 goals and adding 11 assists. In his seven total ECHL games, split between the Cincinnati Cyclones and Norfolk Admirals, he scored one goal and had one assist in seven games. Salituro played in five games with the Lake Erie Monsters, scoring a single goal.

On the other end of the trade is Jordan Schroeder, who will be vying for a spot in the bottom six for the 2017-18 season. Schroeder split his playing time between the Iowa Wild and the Minnesota Wild last season. In 25 games with the Iowa Wild Schroeder had six goals and 12 assists. And in 37 games with Minnesota he had six goals and seven assists in the bottom six.

While it should be taken into account that Schroeder’s sample size is small from last season, his -6.36 Relative Corsi-For percentage is less than impressive. On top of that, the bottom six play was less than stellar for the Wild at times. Schroeder will be hoping to link up with players like Josh Anderson, Matt Calvert, and possibly even Lukas Sedlak to ensure he improves on that.

Jordan Schroeder was the 22nd overall pick of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He has 17 goals and 23 assists in 144 career NHL games, with 56 coming in Vancouver and 88 in Minnesota. Schroeder is now a restricted free agent, and was on a one-year, $650,000 contract last season.
