Washington Capitals Re-Sign T.J. Oshie

T.J. Oshie was brought back by the Washington Capitals this off-season after another unsuccessful run for Lord Stanley’s Cup. He earned 56 points in 68 games for the Capitals this season as they secured their second consecutive President’s Trophy.

Oshie spent seven years with the Blues, signing with them in 2008 instead of finishing his senior season at the University of North Dakota. The Washington Capital’s general manager, Brian MacLellan traded for Oshie in 2015 to give Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin a reliable right-winger. He has not disappointed. Since leaving the St. Louis Blues, Oshie has been a goal-scoring machine.

Oshie set a career high for goals in the 2016-17 season with 33 and continued to put up tallies in the post-season. Oshie earned 10 points in 2015-16’s post-season and 12 this past Stanley Cup search. At 30-years-old, Oshie’s time with the Washington Capitals has been a career renaissance, putting up numbers better than his rookie years.

In addition to impressive NHL play, Oshie has represented the United States in International Tournaments. Oshie was called up to play in the 2009 IIHF World Championship and returned again in 2010 and 2012. Oshie also played for the United States in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics with Blues teammates Kevin Shattenkirk and David Backes. Unfortunately, the USA came up short of the Bronze Medal in a crushing 5-0 loss.

Oshie was also featured in NBC Sports’ featurette, “The Road Through Warroad,” airing earlier in 2017. The film focused on the large concentration of NHL players and Olympians that have come from Warroad, Minnesota. Oshie is among the five NHL players, seven Olympians and 80-plus Division I players emerging from the small lake-side town.
