The Seattle Kraken have made their first post-expansion draft trade, trading forward Tyler Pitlick to the Calgary Flames. Pitlick, a former second-round pick from the Edmonton Oilers, appeared in 38 games last season. He scored six goals and five assists for 11 points, on pace for 23 points over a full 82 game season. On Wednesday night the 29-year-old was Seattle’s expansion pick from the Arizona Coyotes. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports that the deal is for a 2022 fourth-round draft pick.

Calgary Flames Trade for Tyler Pitlick
The Minneapolis, Minnesota native has appeared in 286 games. Before playing in Arizona he played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, and the Oilers. Before playing professional hockey he spent a season playing in the WHL for the Medicine Hat Tigers. In his lone season, he appeared in 56 games scoring 27 goals and 35 assists for 62 total points. The following year Pitlick played in the AHL for the Oklahoma City Barons, where he played his next three seasons. In 196 AHL games, he has scored 28 goals and 57 assists for 85 total AHL points.
What This Means for the Future
Pitlick is a good depth piece for Calgary to have on their roster. At his best, he is a 30 point scoring winger with nice defensive upside. Similarly, he is known to get into the corners and be a grinder player on the third or fourth line as well, making him a valuable asset possibly on the penalty kill. IN return Seattle will be getting a draft pick from Calgary. For a franchise in year one of their team’s existence, draft stock is almost as valuable as prospects and roster players. Not only does it give Seattle a pick for trade leverage but it gives them more roster room for future trades and free-agent signings this summer. Pitlick will likely see some playing time in Calgary this year as they are in need of depth forward pieces. Pitlick might not be the most offensively talented, but he’s a nice addition to the bottom six.
