The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have signed forward Alex Steeves to an entry-level contract. The contract will begin at the start of the 2021-22 season with an average annual value of $834,000.
Alex Steeves Signs with Toronto Maple Leafs
Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish forward Alex Steeves has officially signed his first National Hockey League contract. Spending the past three seasons with the Fight Irish, Steeves has decided to call it a wrap on his collegiate career. In 104 NCAA career games, Steeves recorded 33 goals and 36 assists for 69 total points. On top of that, he finished this season, and last season, first on his team in points. In 29 games this year, he scored 15 goals and 17 assists while adding on eight minutes worth of penalties. He was finishing tenth in scoring among NCAA skaters. Steeves was also fortunate enough to when a Big Ten Championship with the Fighting Irish back during the 2019 season.

Unfortunately, Steeves season came to an end early this year. Both Notre Dame and Michigan were removed from the NCAA Division One Men’s Hockey Tournament because of positive COVID-19 results within the team.
What to Look Forward to
As one of the top college free agents, Steeves had plenty of options on where he could’ve signed. Signing with the Maple Leafs right now means he will have to battle for a roster spot. Forgoing his final year of college, Steeves has been there and done that. At the same time, we shouldn’t get too excited about an undrafted free agent. The Maple Leafs see something in Steeves that could be worth it in the long haul.
Moving forward, Steeves definitely has something unique to him. While it’s unclear when Steeves will make his debut, Maple Leafs fans should look forward to the scoring forward as the team enters training camp next season. At the very worst, he should be a good addition for the AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies.
