Philadelphia Flyers Sign Derick Brassard to One Year Deal
The Flyers acquired the 33-year old Brassard, a left-shot centre who will provide forward depth. He had eight goals and 12 assists in 53 games for the Arizona Coyotes this season. His possession numbers this season were 55.8 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 10.1. Last season with the New York Islanders, Brassard had 10 goals and 22 assists in 66 games. A veteran of 905 NHL games, he has 194 goals and 309 assists over 14 NHL seasons. He was originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round (sixth overall) from the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL in the 2006 entry draft. Brassard is used to travelling as he has played for nine different teams in his career. The Flyers will be his seventh team in the last four seasons.
What This Means For The Future
After not receiving an offer from the Coyotes he liked, Brassard decided to test free agency and landed a spot on the Flyers roster. He fits right in with the overall experienced black and orange team. The Flyers are getting a solid NHL centre with plenty of playoff experience who can fill a bottom-six role. He has played in 117 playoff games scoring 25 goals and adding 43 assists. He is also good on the faceoff dot, having won nearly 5000 draws in his career with a 48.4 win percentage.
In addition, with Derick Brassard signed, the Flyers now have three extremely capable centers in their lineup. Sean Couturier and Kevin Hayes will likely be the first two centers on the depth chart, with Brassard sliding into the third line center position. The Flyers are looking to start next season off strong with this incredible depth.
