Report: Ryan Dzingel Signs with the Arizona Coyotes

Ryan Dzingel

Forward Ryan Dzingel has signed a contract with the Arizona Coyotes. It is a one-year deal worth $1.1 million.

Ryan Dzingel to the Arizona Coyotes

In Dzingel, the Coyotes get a depth forward with high upside potential. That being said, his production just hasn’t been up-to-par with the pair of 20-goal seasons he had from 2017-2019. This season, he scored eight goals and five assists for 13 points, adding 21 minutes in penalties.

Dzingel has been traded multiple times in his career. He started the season with the Carolina Hurricanes but wound up in Ottawa in exchange for Cedric Paquette and Alex Galchenyuk. Carolina signed Dzingel prior to 2019-20 to a two-year contract, with an average annual value (AAV) of $3.375 million. Considering that his production has yet to reach double-digits in goals since signing that deal, it is fair to call it an overpayment at this point in time.

What This Means for the Future

It’s hard to imagine a scenario where Dzingel performs well enough to receive a contract similar to his last. But, he can at least recoup some value with a strong push to end this year. Watch for him to potentially factor in on the power play, and slot in as a third-liner with the ability to slide up if needed. And, if he can get hot, there’s no reason he couldn’t play 16 to 18 minutes a night and contribute offensively. This is a strong depth move for his new team, one that leaves the ball in Dzingel’s court to regain his form.

In an Arizona locker room that has just traded away young forward Connor Garland, Dzingel could push for more ice time. While he will have to earn those minutes, there will be plenty of room for him in the lineup. He might not be the impact player some thought he could be, but the Coyotes will give him an opportunity to prove himself.
