Hockey is back! Normally we’d be closing in on the NHL trade deadline for the final push of the season. However, we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Sidney Crosby Wins Gold for Canada
2010: The Pittsburgh Penguins centre gives the host Canadians the gold medal in Vancouver, British Columbia. Crosby scores past Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller to get Canada a 3-2 overtime win. Canada earns its 14th gold medal, the most by any country at any Winter Olympics.
It’s the final event of the Vancouver games and the United States gets its 37th medal, which is the most at any games. The U.S. wins the medals race for the first time since 1932.
Other Notable Events
1929: The Chicago Blackahwks are shut out for a league-record eighth straight game, but they don’t come away empty-handed. New York Rangers goalie John Ross Roach and Chicago’s Charlie Gardiner keep the game a scoreless tie.
1960: The United States rallies and scores six goals to beat Czechoslovakia, 9-4, in the men’s hockey gold medal game. Roger Christian scores three times and brother, Bill Christian, assists on two of them. Dave Christian follows in his father’s footsteps and is part of the gold-medal winning Miracle on Ice in 1980.
1963: The Rangers Andy Bathgate becomes the first in team history to score 250 goals for the club. Bathgate gets a hat trick in a 6-1 win over the Blackhawks in Chicago.
1974: Boston Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr is credited with the 499th and 500th assists in just his 522nd career game. Orr reaches the milestone in an 8-1 rout of the Detroit Red Wings.
1993: Winnipeg Jets rookie Teemu Selanne scores four times to become the third rookie to score 50 goals in a season. The Finn would go on to score a record-breaking 76 goals as he’d win the Calder Trophy.
1999: Los Angeles Kings centre Ray Ferraro plays in his 1,000th NHL game in a 1-0 loss to the Dallas Stars. Ferraro, Doug Bodger, Russ Courtnall and Garry Galley all play their 1,00th career game that season while with the Kings.
2017: Barry Trotz becomes the sixth coach in NHL history to get 700 victories in the Washington Capitals top the Rangers, 4-1.
2019: The New York Islanders spoil John Tavares‘ return to Long Island with a 6-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
