Just before the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, the Utah Mammoth JJ Peterka trade was announced, as he is headed to the Boston Bruins. This is quite the surprise considering Utah acquired Peterka from the Buffalo Sabres just last year, and some in the Utah community would dismiss possibilities of him being traded. In return to Utah, is the 2026 first-round draft pick and a 2028 first rounder (from Florida, and it is top-10 protected). Let’s discuss.

Utah Mammoth Make JJ Peterka Trade to Boston Bruins
Hearing Boston and Utah are working on a JJ Peterka deal. We will see how this develops

In his first and only season with the Mammoth, the 24-year-old saw a drop in production compared to 2024-2025. Peterka went from a career-high 68 points, to just 47 in what was his third straight season with 20 or more goals. However, perhaps the Mammoth felt that Peterka didn’t fit well into the system head coach André Tourigny utilizes.
One possible reason for the trade was that he was benched during Utah’s first round Stanley Cup Playoff matchup with the Vegas Golden Knights, so it’s possible that he fell down in the pecking order. Players like Clayton Keller and Dylan Guenther garnered most of the ice time, including on the power play. A deal could be announced soon.

However, Peterka is good at generating offence, and the Bruins were looking for a change of roster at forward. The Bruins did well to build their lines, but probably thought they lacked a bit of offensive skill through their top-three lines. It may take some of the offensive dependency on Pavel Zacha and Elias Lindholm in particular, in the Bruins lineup, but it will help with their top-six scoring, regardless. The Bruins had a bunch of successful lines last year, so they have a formula, but probably just want to add a little skill and hopefully someone who will buy into the system.
For Utah, adding a couple draft picks works, for someone who didn’t produce last year. They look to build for the future, as they try to build a contender in Utah.
