Top Detroit Red Wings Forward Lines Need a Key Ingredient This Summer

The Detroit Red Wings forward lines need players who win the intimidation battle. Some have potential, but they must land a true game-changer this offseason. Ideally, they would land a top-six forward capable of laying out multiple body checks per game. A player who can both score at will and defend star players. Lacking someone like that was a massive reason the Wings collapsed down the stretch.

The Detroit Red Wings Forward Lines Adding Physicality

A contingent of Red Wings fans were hoping to see Brady Tkachuk play his last shift for the Ottawa Senators. Helene St. James of Detroit Free Press even entertained the ideas, writing about what Brady Tkachuk could bring to the Red Wings if he wanted out of Ottawa.

St. James wrote, “Just imagine Tkachuk on the left wing with Dylan Larkin at centre and Lucas Raymond at right wing. Tkachuk is a tremendous scorer (463 points in 572 career NHL games, all with the Senators since they drafted him at No. 4 in 2018) as well as a physical impact player, with the second-most hits (1,921) and penalty minutes (821) in the NHL since his 2018 debut.”

Unfortunately for Hockeytown, Tkachuk is still content with the Senators. But the Wings don’t need a forward like Tkachuk to fix the problem.

There are several excellent top-six fits for the Red Wings who can bring that edge. Alexis Lafreniere is one possibility if the Rangers were looking to keep retooling. Lafreniere is a fierce left winger who brings respectable production and a dose of physicality. He’s racked up 568 hits and 250 points across 462 games. Lafreniere’s name was thrown around across the league near the NHL trade deadline, but the Rangers opted not to trade him.

Alex Tuch is another name to watch. Despite his success with the Buffalo Sabres, Tuch is still a pending free agent. Tuch turned his physical play up a notch starting in 2023-24 and hasn’t looked back. He has also scored 33+ goals in each of the last two seasons.

New Additions to the Red Wings Forward Lines Must Fit the ‘Yzerplan’

For the ideal trade to occur, whoever the Wings bring in must fit the Yzerplan. This means finding players still in their twenties, or have just reached 30 but remain in their prime. As for an added bonus? They must find someone who won’t break the bank. Someone they can bring in long-term for between $7 and $8.5 million a year. Lafreniere and Tuch fit that. But if the Wings couldn’t land either of them, they must find a strong equivalent.

With a rising cap, there’s also a chance the Wings could take on someone with Lafreniere’s and Tuch’s calibre, plus a potential reclamation project. This would be an ideal situation, especially since nobody’s certain if Patrick Kane will return in 2026-27. Even if Kane returns, is he still good for a full-time role in the top six, or is he best suited for third-line minutes?

A Jolt for More Than Just Physical Top-Six Detroit Red Wings Forward Lines

A physical top-six forward or two’s presence alone could change the culture in Detroit. In 2025-26, the Wings landed a paltry 1,480 hits in 82 games, good for just 18.0 per contest. Insert ideally two players with more edge, and their hitter’s mentality will rub off on other players. Especially guys with the potential to be ultra-aggressive middle-six forwards, like Marco Kasper and Emmitt Finnie.

Tuch averaged over two shots on goal per game in 2025-26. Adding a player with his style also makes for a strong contrast from Lucas Raymond. Raymond still hesitates with taking shots on net, so acquiring a winger who fires pucks often is a must for Detroit. Tuch’s willingness to take chances has resulted in 33+ goals in three of the past four seasons.

Players in Alex Tuch’s and Alexis Lafreniere’s Mold Could Have Decent Asking Prices

Players like Tuch and Lafreniere will come with a price tag, but the Wings could get them for a better deal than forwards like Robert Thomas and Jason Robertson. Thomas would only go for a massive asking price while the Dallas Stars would likely trade Robertson’s negotiating rights. At that point, the Wings would almost certainly have to sign him for an eight-figure cap hit. A number similar to what they may need to extend Alex DeBrincat.

For more physical Detroit Red Wings forward lines, adding someone with top-six potential, the Wings would likely give up a first-round pick in either 2027 or 2028. One high-end prospect would also need to go. Someone who could take over for a departing player within a year. And finally, a veteran player needing a change of scenery would also likely find themselves in the mix. An underperformer like J.T. Compher or Michael Rasmussen.

It’s hard for the Wings to go wrong with adding a player with edge to the top six. Even if their productivity isn’t elite, versatility and aggressive play are what them worth pursuing if the opportunity is there.
