One of League’s Premier Scoring Wingers Re-Signs With Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have big news to announce today. Speedy and top sniper winger Kyle Connor signs a new deal to keep him in town for eight more years. The Jets couldn’t risk losing such an invaluable part of their team’s success. Now we all know, Connor and the Jets are in it for the long haul. It is a $96 million deal, worth a $12 million average annual value. This is a bonus-laden contract, that includes around $41 million in bonuses. It is also now the richest contract in Winnipeg Jets franchise history.

The Winnipeg Jet Sniper Kyle Connor Re-Signs

The Winnipeg Jets are the only NHL team that Connor has ever known. He was selected by the franchise in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, 17th overall. Since that time, he has used his speed and deceptively hard shot to develop into a premier scoring winger in the NHL.

Since the 2017-18, his rookie NHL campaign as a 21-year-old, he’s been remarkably consistent. And what’s more, is that he’s gotten better. In those eight years, he’s only scored less than 31 goals once. Oh yeah, that was 2020-21, when the league only played a 56-game schedule, and still managed 26 tucks. Furthermore, his career highs were 47 goals in 2021-22, and from this most recent NHL season, 97 points.

Looking at it from a league-wide perspective, Connor is eighth in goals since 2017-18. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 1-2-3 on that list is Auston Matthews, Leon Draisaitl, and Alex Ovechkin. Pretty stiff competition, and definitely special to be in the conversation as a result of his consistency and production. Note the graphic below is from before the start of play yesterday.

From a team perspective, this is keeping the crew together. With stars Josh Morrissey, Mark Scheifele, and led by back-to-back Vezina Trophy-winning Connor Hellebuyck, the Jets are close. It will be interesting to see if head coach Scott Arniel can lead this group to post-season glory. They seem to have the regular season figured out, and now it’s time for the next step. With Connor signing this deal, it’s a sign he and the team have confidence they can do it together.
