Ottawa Senators Veteran Signs Contract Extension

The Ottawa Senators have secured a big piece of their on-ice leadership group. Today, veteran forward Claude Giroux re-signs a contract extension with the club. For those around the Sens organization, this was really a case of not if, but when and what the terms would be, and now, it has finally become reality. The Northern Ontario product is sticking around on a hometown discount of sorts.

The deal is a one-year agreement that will see him potentially getting $4.75 million for the 2025-26 season. PuckPedia has him only counting $2M against the cap. However, based on playing in certain numbers of games and more still for playoffs, Giroux has nearly $2.75M in possible bonuses. In essence, if he plays in 60 regular season games, the Sens win the Stanley Cup, and Giroux played in 50% of the playoff games, that’s how much he could make. It goes down for many different combinations of those criteria.

Claude Giroux Signs Contract Extension to Stay in Ottawa

The Sens had originally signed, the then 34-year-old, to a deal in the summer of 2022. The deal was a three-year, $19.5 million one. Moreover, Giroux rewarded his new teammates, posting a huge 2022-23 campaign. Giroux recorded a career-high 35 tucks. In addition, his 79 points was his highest total since 2019. It was a rejuvenation and his work in developing the offensive game of steady linemates Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk has nearly been indescribable.

As Claude Giroux signs this extension, we must keep in mind that his production has fallen off somewhat. His past two seasons saw him post point totals of 64 and 50, respectively. However, he is still one of the league’s most dominant faceoff men. His 61.5% on the draw the past season was a career high, believe it or not.

Furthermore, over his 18-year career he’s amassed over 1,100 points and much playoff experience. He is a very valuable asset to have around for helping the young players develop their offensive traits. Much like he has done for Stutzle and Tkachuk.

What Does He Bring

As Claude Giroux signs this extension, at this point of his career, look for him to provide more of a supporting role. It will be interesting to see just how much he is utilized and where. His necessary work in the faceoff dot has proven vital to power plays and defensive zone faceoffs. Until someone else, such as Shane Pinto or Stutzle, can step up, Giroux will continue to get much use, and largely for his faceoff work. However, he remains a threat on either power play unit due to his playmaking abilities. This is a great signing for the Sens, and shows the confidence in the group that made the playoffs in 2024-25. Now, as they look to take the next step, Giroux can help lead the next generation into greatness.
