Chris Kreider has a new home it would seem. Reports say the 13-year veteran is leaving the Big Apple and is headed to the Anaheim Ducks.

In addition to Kreider, the Ducks are acquiring a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. In exchange for Kreider, the New York Rangers are acquiring prospect Casey Terrance and a third-round pick in the draft. The Rangers are also not retaining any of Kreider’s $6,5 million cap hit through the next two seasons.
Rumours that the Kreider was available to trade surfaced in December. Chris Johnston, in an article on the Athletic, gave a list of 30 players who were being looked at as possible trade targets. Kreider was included among the 30.
The likelihood of a trade seemed to increase on December 23rd when Kreider was made a healthy scratch for their game. The Rangers made a few trades this past season. Defenceman Jacob Trouba was traded in early December. In addition, forward Kaapo Kakko was traded about a week later.
Assuming the trade is finalized, Kreider ends his career in the Big Apple with 993 games played. The 13-year old veteran scored 326 goals and added 256 assists. Furthermore, Kreider helped the Rangers reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.
Ducks Adding a Scorer to the Lineup
Kreider will be a strong addition to the Anaheim lineup. Kreider will fit in well on their top-six lines. While things have not worked out this season in New York, Kreider is still just a season separated from a 39-goal season, and just three seasons seperated from a 52-goal season.
However, the trade does come with risks. Kreider is 32-years old. While he can still provide offence, the downhill slope of his career is approaching. Furthermore, there is the contract to consider. Kreider is in year five of a seven-year contract he signed in the 2019-20 season. The contract includes a $6.5 million cap hit. The value of the contract along with Kreider’s production by that point will be interesting.
Regardless of the risk, the Ducks clearly feel it is a risk worth taking. If Kreider can help bring the Stanley Cup back to Anaheim, then the trade will definitely have been worth it.
