Edmonton Oilers Forward Out For The Remainder Of The Season

The Edmonton Oilers received rough news on Wednesday morning about Zach Hyman and the injury he suffered in Game 4. According to Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch, Hyman will require surgery and is likely done for the season.

Hyman Out For The Year

During Edmonoton’s 4-1 win, Hyman suffered a serious injury in the first period. He received a hit from Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment, and following the contact, he went straight to the dressing room. Marchment’s hit favoured Hyman’s right side, with a pivotal impact on his shoulder and arm area.

If Knoblauch’s report on Hyman’s injury is true, he won’t be available to feature in the Stanley Cup final if Edmonton get one more win against the Stars in this series. This would be a huge loss for the Oilers. In these playoffs, Hyman has five goals and six assists for seven points in 15 games. The 32-year-old typically fits on the first line as a winger next to Connor McDavid.

In his absence during the game, veteran Corey Perry took his place. Perry stepped up in a big way for Edmonton, recording two points, including the game-winning goal. He ended up playing 16:51 of ice time, the most he’s played in these playoffs aside from games that required overtime.

Injuries Adding Up

Losing Hyman creates another hole in the Oilers’ lineup. Right winger Connor Brown left Game 3 with an undisclosed injury. However, he is reportedly day-to-day, and there is hope that he can return soon. In addition, defenceman Mattias Ekholm still hasn’t been able to make a return to the lineup. Ekholm has missed the entirety of these playoffs thus far, but there was hope that he could return at some point in this third round. In the meantime, Edmonton will likely have to resort to their “Black Aces” to fill in for their wounded forwards.

The Oilers have an opportunity to close out the series and advance to the final for a second straight year in Game 5 on Thursday.
