Trevor Zegras‘ injury diagnosis is a silver lining for the Anaheim Ducks “golden boy” and a best-case scenario given the injury. While his six-week recovery from a torn meniscus is a setback, it spares the team a potentially devastating long-term loss. This latest injury adds to Zegras’ unfortunate streak of health issues, but it also highlights the urgent need for players like Mason McTavish and Leo Carlsson to step up and carry the offensive load in his absence.
Bittersweet News
Anaheim Ducks’ young star, Trevor Zegras, is set to miss around six weeks following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. He sustained the injury on December 4th, during a game against the Vegas Golden Knights. The injury initially appeared much more severe. After an awkward fall in the second period, Zegras couldn’t leave the ice on his own, raising fears of a long-term or even season-ending absence. The sight of Zegras, one of the most electrifying young talents in the NHL, exiting the game unable to put weight on his leg left fans fearing the worst. Many speculated a potential ACL tear or other long-term damage that could sideline him for the rest of the season or beyond. Given the circumstances, the torn meniscus diagnosis and projected recovery timeline are arguably the best-case scenario for both Zegras and the Ducks.

Another Tough Break
This setback, however, continues an unlucky streak of injuries for Zegras. In the 2023-2024 season, a broken ankle and groin issue limited him to just 31 games. This latest injury marks his third significant health challenge in just over a year. Despite these hurdles, the 23-year-old has been a vital player for the Ducks, tallying 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 24 games this season before his injury. Over his career, Zegras has showcased his elite playmaking skills, particularly with his dazzling lacrosse-style goals and assists. He also eclipsed 20 goals and 60 points in his first two full seasons, but his health and production over the last two seasons have some fans and pundits concerned.
Who Will Step Up
With Zegras sidelined until at least late January, the Ducks face a significant challenge. Players like Mason McTavish and Leo Carlsson must step up to fill the void. McTavish, in particular, will need to elevate his game. After a breakout sophomore campaign in 2023-2024, where he recorded 65 points in 78 games, the 21-year-old center has struggled to maintain that momentum this season. His offensive production has fallen short of expectations, and Zegras’ absence presents a critical opportunity for him to reassert himself as a key contributor. In the last five games, he only has two points (one goal and one assist).

Carlsson . Carlsson, the Ducks’ highly touted rookie and second overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, has shown flashes of the brilliance, elite skill, speed, and hockey IQ that made him a top prospect. In Zegras’ absence, he will also be asked to take on more responsibility. With Zegras out, Carlsson has a golden opportunity to cement his role as a key contributor, potentially accelerating his development into a cornerstone player for Anaheim’s future.
An Opportunity
The Ducks, currently at the bottom of the Pacific Division, must rely on their young talent to keep the team competitive during this challenging stretch. While the Ducks are undoubtedly facing an uphill battle without their star forward, the resilience and growth of their young core during this challenging stretch could set the foundation for a brighter future once Zegras returns. His expected return later this winter could still provide a spark as the Ducks push for a stronger finish and salvage something positive from this season.
