Veteran Defenceman Lands New Contract

Veteran defenceman Tyson Barrie has himself a new contract. The veteran is signing with the Calgary Flames and is locked up for the next year. With the new deal in place, he will earn $1.25 million per season, which is great for the veteran.

Barrie Lands Contract With the Flames

It was a trade that made sense at the time and became a win for the Edmonton Oilers. Unfortunate part for Barrie is he was the one sent to the Nashville Predators for Mattias Ekholm. During the 2022-23 season, Barrie was producing and was helping out on the power play. However, the Oilers had Evan Bouchard and needed a boost from a shutdown standpoint.

In that season, Barrie went on to have ten goals and 43 points with the Oilers. Also, he was a 0.5 point per game player with the Predators after the trade. During the 2023-24 season, he struggled a bit. In 41 games, he scored only one goal and had 15 points. It was his lowest output since the 2012-13 season. Barrie still has a lot to offer and is a good depth defenceman.

Offensively he has the tools to help push the pace forward and transition. Also, he can be a weapon on the power play of utilized and can help boost production that way. This is a good contract for Barrie and the team overall.

What this Means

The Barrie contract is a great deal. It is great value for what he brings and the position he plays. He is very capable of playing second pair minutes and being a stable offensive presence on the back end.

Defenceman do not grow on trees, so being able to land Barrie is a huge deal. He may not be the shiniest defenceman that was on the market, but he helps fill a need and adds depth to this Flames team. This is great for Barrie, who now has security after bouncing around.
