The Calgary Flames are trying to cement the future of their crease. News broke that Dustin Wolf signed a new contract with the club. The restricted free agent inked a deal of $850k over two years.
Dustin Wolf Signs with Flames Again
Wolf has started to see some time in the show with the Flames. He’s played in 18 games across two seasons in his NHL career. The Gilroy, Calif. native got 17 games this season and went 7-7-1 with a 3.16 goals-against-average and .893 save percentage. Those might not seem like the best numbers, but he did show some growth in limited duty with the Flames.
The 23-year-old has a career mark of 8-7-1 with a 3.03 goals-against-average and .896 save percentage. Calgary originally drafted him in the seventh round, 214th overall of the 2019 NHL Draft. Wolf played with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL and picked up numerous honours with the club. He is also the two-time AHL goalie of the year for the Calgary Wranglers. The young goalies has also represented the United States at the international level at the World Junior Championships.
What it Means
The uncertain future of the Calgary crease becomes a little clearer for General Manager Craig Conroy. Jacob Markstrom and Daniel Vladar have patrolled the blue paint the last couple of seasons. However, Wolf is itching to prove that he can be an NHL starter.
Many thought that Markstrom would be traded at the deadline, but that time has come this summer. Wolf should get more chances to test his mettle against the highest-level of scorers once the netminder question has been answered in Alberta. The future in net now belongs to Wolf, as the Flames turn a new leaf over to the youth side of things. This is a great deal for both sides.
