Veteran goaltender Cam Talbot has a new contract. After betting on himself and signing a one year deal with the Los Angeles Kings, he is on the move. Talbot is signing with the Red Wings and for two years. Given his status as a veteran, he will have an AAV of $2.5 million. This is great for him as he continues his professional career and backstopping a team.
Talbot Inks Contract with Red Wings
What a whirlwind of a few seasons for Talbot. After a stellar season with the Minnesota Wild during the 2021-22 season, he went to the Ottawa Senators, where things did not go smoothly. Talbot saw his save percentage drop down to .898 and his goals against average rise to 2.93. However, he went on to sign with the Los Angeles Kings and things took a turn for the better.
The Kings were one of the better defensive teams in the league. For a while, Talbot found success behind them and saw his numbers jump back up. During the 2023-24 season, Talbot finished with a .913 save percentage and a 2.50 goals against average. That’s a huge jump from the year before and great to see him rebound. Talbot and fellow netminder David Rittich were stellar, finishing in the top 15 in goals saved above expected.
A tremendous year for Talbot, and he saw playing time in the playoffs. In three games in the first round against the Oilers, had subpar results. Now, he gets a fresh start and a new year to showcase why he’s worth the deal.
What This Means for the Red Wings
The Talbot contract makes sense for both sides. Talbot gets the chance to show why he’s worth the deal and build off what was a successful campaign. As for the team, they get to shore up their goaltending.
The goaltending market was small, so landing Talbot is huge. He is a player that has proven himself over his career and has shown he can help for a successful tandem in the crease. He will get to shine in the crease and help be part of a team that’s intends on contending for the playoffs. This is a great deal for Talbot and the team heading into the 2024-25 season.
