Report: Veteran Blueliner Inks New Contract

Shayne Gostisbehere signs

We have more news this free agent period as Shayne Gostisbehere signs a new contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. News broke on Monday about the new deal. This contract is for around $10 million and is for three years. The deal has an average cap hit of $3.2 million and runs through the end of the 2026-27 season.

Shayne Gostisbehere Signs New Deal

Gostisbehere has played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Arizona Coyotes, Carolina Hurricanes and the Detroit Red Wings over his 10-year NHL career. The Florida native totaled 10 goals and 46 assists for 56 points in 81 games this season for Detroit. He had a Corsi for 56.4 and a relative Corsi of 14.0.

The veteran puck-moving defenceman has 97 goals and 270 assists for 367 points in 619 career games. Philadelphia originally draft him in the third round, 78th overall of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Gostisbehere is a former NCAA national champion as he helped lead Union College to its only Division I national title in the 2014 tournament. He was named the NCAA Division I tournament’s most outstanding player for leading the then-Dutchmen to the collegiate crown.

His pre-NHL career also yielded a gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championships with Team USA. The defenceman was also on Team North America at the 2015 World Cup of Hockey.

What It Means

Gostisbehere was able to be a solid contributor for a Red Wings team that narrowly missed out on the post-season. The blueliner was able to provide some veteran leadership to a young defensive group still trying to find its way.

He can provide some offence from the blueline and might be able to do that in the upcoming season. When healthy, he’s been able to put up double-digit goals a number of times in his career. This could be a good value signing as part of the July free agency period.
