Veteran New York Rangers Forward Placed on Waivers

Devils stock up stock down; Barlcay Goodrow waived

It looks like changes are coming to the New York Rangers. News broke on Tuesday afternoon that Barclay Goodrow has been waived by the club. This breaking story can be credited to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman. Being placed on waivers means any team can claim him before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Barclay Goodrow Waived By Rangers

Goodrow has played for the San Jose Sharks, Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers during his 10-year NHL career. The veteran forward struggled during the regular season for the Rangers with four goals and eight assists for 12 points in 80 games. He had a Corsi for of 35.4 and a relative Corsi of -20.1. However, the 31-year-old took his game to another level in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Goodrow shined during the Rangers run to the Eastern Conference Final with six goals and eight points in 16 games.

He’s totaled 60 goals and 109 assists for 169 points in 572 career games. Goodrow has been an ace in the post-season with the Sharks, Lightning and the Rangers. The Toronto native signed an entry-level deal with Sharks in March 2014 after a standout OHL career with the Brampton Battalion.

He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Lightning and has come up with clutch goals. Goodrow is also a physical player that’s not afraid to mix it up.

What it Means

Goodrow’s time is done with the Blueshirts. Someone will either claim Goodrow, trade for him or he will get a buyout. Rangers General Manager Chris Drury will save the team nearly $3.89 million if Goodrow is bought out. However, there will be a penalty of $1 million the following season, 3.5 million in 2026-27 and $1.11 million in each of the next three years.

Some thought Goodrow did enough to save his roster spot, but the Rangers have players like Alexis Lafreniere, K’Andre Miller and Igor Shesterkin to sign for the future. The cap number going up does help, but the Rangers are going to try and maximize cap space.
