NHL Rumours: Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets

Hurricanes training camp; NHL rumours

The 2023-24 season is underway, but there are plenty of NHL rumours to be had. Teams are trying to lock in their coaches and players, so they won’t have to answer so many questions. Player contracts aren’t the only ones that general managers have to worry about. Today’s NHL rumours focus on the Carolina Hurricanes and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

Carolina Hurricanes

Rumour: The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun talked about where contract talks are with Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Analysis: There has been a run of recent coach extensions in Lindy Ruff and Todd McLellan. Carolina’s bench boss would like to get his next contract taken care of. However, that hasn’t been finished at this time.

Brind’Amour said the hopes to get an extension wrapped up because he’s tired of answering questions about it. He’s hoping that he’ll get a phone call from general manager Don Waddell about a new deal being ready to go.

The Carolina head coach has done a great job making the team a contender. Carolina has the tools to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, Brind’Amour has been the man pulling the strings behind the bench. He’ll get that contract done sooner rather than later.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Rumour: Frank Seravalli of the Daily Faceoff said the team is looking to trade one of its right-handed defencemen.

Analysis: Columbus seems to want to make room for David Jiricek on its blueline. Seravalli mentioned three candidates that the Jackets could deal. The names of Andrew Peeke, Adam Boqvist and Jake Bean are the ones coming up in conversations for trades.

The Jackets haven’t decided which player they want to move. However, they’ll likely deal the player that will get them the most back in return. Columbus would probably want to send out Boqvist or Bean, but will entertain offers for Peeke.

So who would be in the market for a young defenceman? Could the Vancouver Canucks or the Montreal Canadiens be on the lookout for some defensive depth? Moving one of the three defenders will give the team a chance to get something back in return or relieve some salary cap space.
