Canadiens Sign New Alex Newhook Contract
Newhook has only played for the Colorado Avalanche during his three-year NHL career. The St. Johns, Newfoundland native netted a career-high 14 goals and netted 30 points in 82 games this season. He spent most of the time as the team’s third-line centre during the 2022-23 campaign. The 22-year-old had a Corsi for of 54.6 and a relative Corsi of 2.7.
Newhook has 27 goals and 66 points in 159 career games. Colorado drafted him in the first round, 16th overall of the 2019 NHL Draft. He just wrapped up his entry-level contract where he made just over $908,000 per season. Newhook has also played for Team Canada in international play. He played at the 2019 Under-18 World Championships and won silver at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championships.
The dual-handed centre also played part of two seasons with Boston College in the NCAA. He got 19 goals in the 2019-20 season with the Hockey East power. This offseason, Colorado traded Newhook to the Canadiens in exchange for the 31st and 37th overall picks in the 2023 NHL Draft.
Impact of Alex Newhook Contract
Newhook has been a solid bottom-six centre for the Avalanche. However, he may be in line for more minutes on a young Canadiens team. Newhook has been pretty flexible and shown he can play in the middle of lines two through four.
This adds another reliable scoring option to the Canadiens roster and further depth down the middle. Newhook is still young but has been solid in getting double-digit goals in his first two full seasons in the league. He should be a big part of the Canadiens moving forward.
