The Detroit Red Wings have announced that they have signed Daniel Sprong to a one-year, $2 million dollar contract. The deal comes after the forward did not receive a qualifying offer from the Seattle Kraken.
Red Wings sign Daniel Sprong
Sprong had a career year for the Seattle Kraken last season and he scored 21 goals and added 25 assists for 46 points in 66 games. He also scored one goal and one assist during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Over his career, Sprong has scored 67 goals and 49 assists for 116 points in 268 games.
Sprong was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, 46th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Red Wings Add Solid Scoring Option to Their Forward Group
In Sprong, the Red Wings add a solid scoring option to go alongside Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and David Perron. Sprong’s 46 points last season would have placed in 3rd on the Red Wings roster in scoring and his 21 goals would also put him in third.
Despite being just 26 years old, Sprong has bounced around the league so far during his career as the Red Wings are now his fifth team. He’s spent time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Washington Capitals, and the Seattle Kraken.
The Kraken not bringing Sprong back given his strong season came as a bit of a surprise. However, one team’s loss is another team’s gain as the Red Wings will likely be able to slot Sprong into their top-six group next season. Sprong possesses a strong shot who’s great at finishing and is an excellent skater. He also is a very creative playmaker and is finally starting to put it all together at the NHL level. Detroit grabs Daniel Sprong at a very cap-friendly number at just $2 million. It’s more of a prove-it contract to see if Sprong can keep the momentum going from last season.
