It’s time for another round of NHL rumours. We’re closing in on the end of the 2022-23 season and the rumours are going to ramp up. The 30 other teams that didn’t make the Stanley Cup Final are positioning themselves for the future. It was a good season for the Carolina Hurricanes, but they wanted to get a little bit further in the post-season. Carolina has a good core and they want to keep it together. Today’s NHL rumours looks at a Brett Pesce extension.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Carolina Wants Brett Pesce Extension

Rumour: The Athletic’s Cory Lavalette looked into the Hurricanes off-season plans during the off-season roundup. One of their biggest priorities was re-signing Pesce and fellow blueliner Brady Skjei. Both players are going into the last year of their respective contracts. Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell doesn’t want to lose either for nothing in free agency. There’s always the idea of trading one of the defencemen if the two sides can’t come to a deal.

Pesce did recently change representation to Judd Moldover. A player that changes agents usually gets a big contract from the new agent. Moldover has come through with some solid contracts for his clients. Waddell could still make a deal if Pesce’s demands are too high.

Can Hurricanes Can Brett Pesce Extension Done?

Pesce does enter The Athletic’s trade target board at the ninth slot. The Tarrytown, NY native is making $4.025 million per season with the last year of his deal coming next season. Pesce took a team-friendly deal the last time, but one wonders how much of a raise he’ll seek.

Carolina has a good group of players and it will be a contender next season barring disaster. However, locking down Pesce and Skjei will be an important task for Waddell this off-season.
