Report: Toronto Maple Leafs Hire New General Manager

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager

The Toronto Maple Leafs general manager post has been reportedly filled. Media reports are saying that former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving has been hired to fill the vacant post. Treliving replaces Kyle Dubas as, who mutually parted ways with the club. TSN’s Darren Dreger was one of the first to have the news.

Treliving wasn’t out of work long as he now takes over the high-pressure job. He becomes the Maple Leafs’ 18th general manager in team history and comes into an uncertain time. The Leafs did win their first Stanley Cup Playoff series since 2004. However, there were expectations for the club to go further. Those expectations fell flat after the Leafs were dispatched by the eventual Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers in five games.

Treliving’s old club also had some failed expectations as the Flames missed out on the post-season. Calgary swung a big deal with Florida to see Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar come to Alberta. However, the Flames were eliminated from playoff contention, which led to the firing of Treliving and head coach Darryl Sutter. Trelving now goes into an even more high-pressure situation.

Impact of Brad Treliving Hire as Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager

The Leafs have loads of questions to ask themselves this off-season. Will the core group of four stay together? Can the new general manager get Auston Matthews to sign a contract extension at some point? Will the team’s defensive needs be answered. This and trying to navigate the flat-cap era are things Treliving has to consider.

One can call it sort of an upgrade with Treliving’s Flames winning two series in nine years over the Leafs one since 2004. However, the Leafs fan base is desperate for more and a deep post-season run.
