NHL Rumour: Future Behind The New Jersey Devils Bench

What an exciting season it has been for the New Jersey Devils. So much joy for that fan base who has suffered for a decade. With their offseason beginning, there is work to be done. The latest buzz surrounds their key free agents and who can be on the move. But the biggest question lies with Lindy Ruff‘s future behind the bench.

The Future Of Lindy Ruff

Rumour: Elliote Friedman discusses the future of Lindy Ruff

What a year it has been for Lindy Ruff. First it started with “Fire Lindy” just a handful of games into the year. Only to have an apology of “Sorry Lindy” and for good reason. Lindy Ruff had a historic campaign for the Devils. Spurned by a 13 game winning streak, the Devils took off running.

They set a franchise record of 112 points and 52 wins. In addition, Ruff led this team to having the biggest point differential in league history (49). New Jersey had 26 comeback victories (had 27 wins last season) and set a record for road wins in a single season. Crazy to think that THIS years Devils team was the best ever given the names they’ve had within the organization. Ruff is also a Jack Adams award nominee this year for his efforts. However, Ruff is in need of a new contract.

The Future Behind The Devils Bench

Lindy Ruff has been the Devils bench boss for three years. The players love him and love playing for him. Friedman has said that he has heard that Ruff will be back next year and the desire is to work towards a deal. And rightfully so. This team accomplished a lot and is only getting started. But that poses yet another problem. Andrew Brunette is currently their assistant coach and could garner interest.

What About Brunette

After being dismissed by the Florida Panthers, New Jersey signed him to a three-year deal. Brunette is an assistant behind Ruff. You got the sense that when Ruff decides to give coaching a rest, the reigns are handed over. However, that may not be the case. Brunette had a successful year on Florida (Presidents Trophy) and after being behind the bench for this New Jersey team, he could receive inquiries. There are teams who need new coaches and Brunette fits the bill.
