NHL Rumours: Calgary Flames Defenceman Linked With Surprise Exit

nhl rumours

Today’s NHL Rumours takes a look at perhaps a surprising rumbling:

It has been a somewhat underwhelming season for the Calgary Flames so far. After some major off-season moves, Calgary was expected to set alight the league and be a lock for the playoffs.

Instead, their stars have struggled and currently stand out of the playoff picture. However, they are not so far away from appearing in the post-season that they are guaranteed sellers.

Therefore, a small mid-season retool at the trade deadline could potentially change the fortunes of the team’s season.

NHL Rumours: MacKenzie Weegar Named as Potential Trade Bait

Per David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, one of the names put out as possibly being available on the trade block is Mackenzie Weegar.

It is somewhat surprising to hear Weegar mentioned. He was only acquired via a blockbuster trade this summer. However, he is the type of player that could be moved for a good amount of assets, without leaving too much of a hole in the team.

Although he states a trade is not ‘presently imminent’ the Ottawa Senators are very interested. In terms of what Weegar thinks, the Ottawa-born defenceman would likely be open to returning home.

How Would the Trade Work?

Although he has had a down year in terms of points, Weegar would be a huge coup for the Sens.

Offensively strong, he has maintained a steady points average during his time in the NHL. He is also a huge help to his team’s forward group, using his talents at defeating his opponents one-on-one to facilitate rushes up the ice.

Weegar is also blessed defensively. As noted above, he is excellent at taking on opposing skaters when moving forward. He is equally adept at doing this in his own zone, using both his stick and body to protect the goal.

Pagnotta reports that Ottawa is in the market specifically for a top-four defenceman and the attributes Weegar has would make him a perfect fit.

In terms of what the Senators would have to offer, it is understood they are actively shopping Nikita Zaitsev. Currently, Weegar has a lower cap hit. This increases by $3 million in the summer, making Zaitsev cheaper in the long run. The Russian is a steady defenceman and if Ottawa sweetens the deal with a pick or prospect, the deal may appeal to the Flames.
